DE010 · DE · A1 / A2 · grammar, vocabulary

The question

Why is it Ich weiß es but Ich kenne Berlin?

Wissen typically means knowing a fact, answer or piece of information: Ich weiß die Antwort (I know the answer); Ich weiß, dass sie kommt (I know that she is coming). Kennen expresses being acquainted or familiar with someone or something: Ich kenne Anna; Ich kenne diese Stadt.

Compare everyday uses

EnglishGermanPattern
I know the answer.Ich weiß die Antwort.wissen + information
I know where he lives.Ich weiß, wo er wohnt.wissen + indirect question
I know your brother.Ich kenne deinen Bruder.kennen + person
I know this restaurant.Ich kenne dieses Restaurant.kennen + place

The verbs conjugate differently: ich weiß, du weißt, er weiß; ich kenne, du kennst, er kennt. To describe an ability, German usually uses können rather than wissen: Ich kann schwimmen (I can swim). Kennenlernen means to get to know or meet someone.

Common mistake

Avoid *Ich weiß Berlin when you mean you know the city; use Ich kenne Berlin. Avoid *Ich weiß schwimmen for the ordinary meaning 'I can swim'; say Ich kann schwimmen.

Remember

Wissen for facts and answers, kennen for familiarity, können for abilities.
