The question
Why is it с другом, учителем and поездом?
The instrumental case commonly identifies accompaniment after с (with), a role or profession after certain forms of быть (to be), and the means by which an action happens. Its endings vary by noun gender and number. Learn both the construction and the noun form rather than translating every English 'with' mechanically.
Common instrumental constructions
| Russian | English | Pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Я говорю с другом. | I'm talking with a friend. | с + instrumental |
| Она работает врачом. | She works as a doctor. | Profession in instrumental |
| Мы едем поездом. | We're travelling by train. | Means of transport |
| Он пишет ручкой. | He's writing with a pen. | Instrument or tool |
Typical singular endings include masculine/neuter -ом or -ем (столом, морем) and feminine -ой/-ей or -ью (книгой, неделей, дверью). In the plural, -ами/-ями is common. Russian also uses instrumental after prepositions such as перед and между in spatial expressions: перед домом (in front of the house), между домами (between houses).
Common mistake
Don't assume с always means 'with' and always takes instrumental. С + genitive can mean 'from/off', as in со стола (off the table). Compare с другом (with a friend).
Remember
Recognize instrumental through its construction: accompaniment, role, instrument, and certain prepositions.
