The question
What's the difference between прийти, уйти, войти and выйти?
Russian prefixes add path or direction to motion verbs. With walking verbs, прийти often means arriving on foot, уйти leaving on foot, войти entering, and выйти exiting. Many prefixed forms are perfective, while related imperfective forms use a different stem: прийти → приходить, уйти → уходить.
Four useful pairs
| Perfective | Imperfective | Typical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| прийти | приходить | to arrive / come |
| уйти | уходить | to leave / go away |
| войти | входить | to enter |
| выйти | выходить | to go out / exit |
In the past, perfective forms can present a completed motion event: Она пришла домой (She arrived home). Imperfective forms can describe repetition or a process: Она часто приходила домой поздно (She often came home late). Other prefixes, such as пере- ('across') and до- ('as far as'), build further path meanings, often with their own case or preposition patterns.
Common mistake
Don't treat a prefixed verb as simply 'идти plus a prefix' in all tenses. The imperfective partner may use ходить-based stems, and the aspect pairing must be learned: прийти / приходить.
Remember
Learn each motion prefix together with the verb's aspectual partner and a sentence showing its direction.
